For a few days, I have tried to write about motivation. I am just not motivated. Every time I think of how to start, I stop. I start again. I read the few sentences and decide it doesn’t work. I find other things to distract me. Solitaire is my favorite go to game to pass the time.
Why can’t I get motivated to write about motivation?
Getting motivated can be difficult. So, why not be authentic and let you know my struggles. Then I can let you know how I overcome them, so perhaps you can too.
Writing has always come hard to me. Not that I am a perfectionist, but I do go over every sentence and rewrite a lot. I also question will someone want to read this? Staring at a blank page is scary, finishing a blog and posting is scarier. I need a big push!
There are two ways I define motivation. Push vs. Desire.
Sometimes we need to push ourselves to do things that get us where we want to be. Other times the desire will carry us forward.
When I was struggling with the motivation to write this blog, I went for a walk. Grabbed the dog, stepped out into nature and connected all my senses to the surroundings. Eventually the random thoughts clogging my brain dissipated. Ideas about how to get motivated swirled around my brain. My motivation to write this blog kicked in, my break worked!
Desire projects/activities are easy, we want to do them. But the push activities require some assistance. When I am lacking motivation here are a few ideas that have helped.
Take a walk in nature
Tell a friend or colleague
Make a list
Set goals and break them down into manageable parts
Remember the WHY
Reward yourself (but not with food)
Schedule your activity
A consistent schedule
Inspiring organized space to work
So there it is, the push and desire method for motivation. Now that I have completed this blog post I am going to reward myself by reading a book.
